Magnetic Concrete

Rupert Walshe and I entered a ideas competition commissioned by the concrete society. They asked for new designs that used concrete to challenge peoples preconceptions of the material. We wanted to create a concrete that was temporal in the form of a interactive facade.

Working with a magnet manufacturer we added cobalt to the mix of concrete and through submitting these a strong electromagnetic field and trial and error we managed to produce a concrete which was magnetised. From there we speculated that it could be possible to make a facade out of small magnetised blocks of concrete. Which could interact with each other and controlled electromagnetic inputs.

Our entry was shortlisted and published in Icon Magazine
