BatHouse Project

The BatHouse competition was set up by the London Wetland Centre, a wildlife reserve on the outskirts of central London.

There were two main aims from the brief. One was to create a structure that would attract a variety of wild bats through out the year. Second was to create a viewing platform where the public could observe and learn about the lives of Londons Bat population. As part of a team of four (Tessa Baird, Ketan Lad & Rupert Walshe), we decided to combine the two parts within one building so the public could get as close to the bats as possible without disturbing them. CCTV technology would also be used to feed live images from inside the roosts. We used laser cut laminated structures to produce a design which had both an inner and outer shape, The relationship between the inside and outside shapes were determined by the different habitat needs of the bats.
