The brief of the competition was to design a prototype for a non-profit paediatric clinic in East Africa.
We designed the building as a sequence of courtyards that slowly lead you deeper into the plan and to more private areas. The entrance courtyard space could be used for more community activities such as temporary markets, informal lectures and events, or simple a place to charge your mobile phone. The secondary (more private) courtyards were conceived as places for families who were visiting to sleep or cook, for kids to play, or for people to wait. Through this strategy of courtyards, we hoped that the building could become more than just a place you went when you were sick, and more integrated into the community that it served.
This competition was done as part of a team consisting of myself, Rupert Walshe, Vinay Patel and Tessa Baird and was shortlisted.
